Beat the Bridge 2010

Team Juliana

Thank you for supporting Team Juliana and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). We are thrilled to have you join us on May 16th for Beat the Bridge (we'll be doing the 4 mile walk) and/or for you to make a donation on behalf of our team.

Juliana was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes early Christmas morning in 2008. We have learned a lot during the past 14 months about how to monitor and manage her condition, and have been blessed with great health care, a strong support network of family and friends, a wonderful nanny with Type 1 diabetes herself, and supportive school staff to help us do the best job we can keeping her in good health every day.

Overall, Juliana has been a great trooper with her condition and does not let diabetes hold her back. She loves being in kindergarten and has made a lot of new friends this year. Outside of school, she enjoys drama classes (and has already appeared in The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King and Aladdin), art class and ski lessons with dad this winter. After the first 14 months of managing her diabetes with insulin shot therapy (which involves up to 6-8 shots per day), we have just moved her to an insulin pump (www.myomnipod.com). We are optimistic that the pump will allow us to control Juliana's blood sugar levels much more tightly.

During the past year, Greg, Juliana, Lucy and I have all participated in various research programs focused on diagnosing and managing type 1 diabetes. We have gotten more involved in JDRF and have been very impressed with the organization and the extent of research they have invested in. In particular, we are encouraged by the Artificial Pancreas Project (http://www.artificialpancreasproject.com/) as a huge step forward in managing this disease. We share Juliana's dream that there will be a cure for diabetes in her lifetime, but also recognize there is much work still to do before scientists can make that happen.

Again, thank you for your support of Team Juliana and JDRF.  It means the world to us. Juliana had a great time surrounded by 40+ friends wearing pink Team Juliana t-shirts at last year's Beat the Bridge walk, and we are looking forward to another great day this year.
