Dear Friends and Family,
It's time to lace up the running shoes to take another lap around the UW campus for Jacqueline's Journey! On Sunday May 16th, our family team, Jacqueline's Journey, will be participating in the 28th Annual Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). This is my 12th year participating in a JDRF event in support of my daughter, Jacqueline, who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes on October 15, 1997. Since that time, she has relied on manually injected insulin and a strict regimen of blood testing and a controlled diet in order to stay alive. Insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. This year is especially exciting for me since Jacqueline is serving as the Beat the Bridge Youth Ambassador! I hope that you will consider joining me on May 16th and/or supporting Jacqueline's Journey.
I have no doubt that JDRF is my best hope for a cure for diabetes. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.4 billion to diabetes research, including $101 million in FY2009. In FY2009, JDRF funded research projects in 22 countries throughout the world, including more than 40 human clinical trials. My goal is to find a cure for diabetes in Jacqueline's lifetime.
Thank you for your consideration! Barbara
About Diabetes
Type 1, or Juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that strikes suddenly, makes someone insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Someone is diagnosed with juvenile diabetes every hour, and approximately 15,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes each year. That's over 40 children each day.
